Like you, I watched and read the coverage about the disastrous earthquake in Haiti. I cried. Then I prayed. And at the same time I am reminded of how a call for help can ripple around the world. Quick action from leaders who stepped right in has resulted in overwhelming support for thousands of Haitian people.
In the midst of the mind-boggling devastation, thank goodness so many from around the world have rallied to provide aid. Leaders worldwide have heeded the call addressing the unprecedented crisis.
But how do leaders learn to take charge on a moment’s notice? How do leaders stay on the right path implementing crisis management strategies? What is the process for learning about what to do?
It is vital for leaders to prepare themselves for the unexpected. This requires a keen focus including —
- Balance attention to stay focused
- Commitment to self-control and confidence
- Review of policies and procedures
- Dissemination of resources to all affected and/or interested parties
- Training and crisis communication
- Coordination with media and designated spokesperson
- Contingency planning to anticipate alternatives
Without haste, leaders must stand ready to act. More importantly, they must be proactive and recognize that their decisions can make all the difference in the world.
