As the year 2009 came to a close, there were ample opportunities to reflect. Likewise, there are ways to look forward. Sure, that’s the annual ritual of New Year’s resolutions. But, sometimes I think I’m among the thousands who just utter the words in earnest only to fall back into a slump by the end of January. This year will only be different for those who commit themselves to a vision. These individuals chart a definitive path.
Over the last year, it’s interesting to reflect upon a pivotal year in my professional life. This year was full of excitement, intrigue, and solemn moments. But, it was no different than every other eventful year I worked in the political environment for more than two decades. What made this year different for me this year was the culmination of work compiled over several years to bring forth my new book entitled “Leadership Building Blocks: An Insider’s Guide to Success.”
In the opening chapters of the book, I write about focus and vision people need to take steps in any role. But, particularly for leaders this is important to take proactive steps setting forth an action plan. Without clear direction, leaders are destined to fail. Period.
So, if you’ll indulge me, I believe there are several ways we can all develop the fortitude required to stay committed in any journey. Leaders should get out pen and paper and take notes.
- Do Your Homework – Enter any initiative after you have done your research about the costs, implications, angles, and potential pitfalls.
- Focus – Identify a core objective and stick to it. That way you can maximize your energy and take the lead in areas where you really shine.
- Tenacity – Stick with it! Even when you cannot see the end of a project, research endeavor, or follow up inquiries stay the course. Your persistence will pay off in the end!
Noted worldwide motivational speaker and bestselling author Les Brown said it best when he said “you cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstance unless you change.”
That’s it! Now follow that path of bread crumbs and stay the course!
