A few weeks ago, I reflected about leaders who are all about service to others. Several names came to mind and then I remembered a book that I read last year from Senator Henry L. Marsh III. He had penned his memoirs and shared reflections from over a 50-year time period and his experiences as a young attorney and his pivotal roles as the first African American mayor of Richmond, Virginia.
By way of full disclosure, I was honored to serve as his executive director almost a decade ago at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Public Policy based in Richmond, Virginia. Given his role in the Virginia General Assembly, he had created a forum for discussions about civil rights and advocacy and I was humbled to serve in the leadership role and to learn from him.
This video below can only provide a few highlights about his contributions as a civil rights icon and his unwavering commitment to serving others. This was evident in several ways including:
- community engagement
- courageous leadership
- sustained mobilization serving others
