Nelson Mandela’s Legacy

In the early 1990s, I had the privilege of visiting South Africa. During my travels throughout the country, I was humbled by a visit to Robben Island and the life experiences of South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Recent news reports focus on Mandela’s ailing health and who he once was. But, I would rather celebrate his accomplishments and his example for leaders that prevails everywhere.

• Thrived despite childhood tragedy when his father died
• Peacefully led the anti-apartheid movement and became a symbol of justice
• Found forgiveness despite 27 years of imprisonment on Robben Island
• Wrote Long Walk to Freedom while imprisoned to enlighten and empower
• Honored with the 1993 Nobel peace prize for his work toward social justice
• Earned greater respect as the first black African of South Africa
• Convened world leaders to demonstrate the importance of global alliances
