Running Towards Leadership

Please tell me that you saw the news report from Ohio that reminds us that sportsmanship still exist.

It was an amazing story about a high school senior, Megan Vogel, who was running the final stretch of her track and field event. When she noticed another runner who stumbled and fell in front of her, she stopped to help her along and they crossed the finish line together. This type of camaraderie does exist!

In a world that has become increasingly callous and selfish, it is encouraging to see a simple act of kindness. More than that Vogel’s action reminds us that leadership runs deep and within.

Just take a moment to reflect about the selflessness demonstrated. Vogel was in the midst of a fiercely competitive environment. Her race was underway. Like any athlete, or a track and field runner specifically, her mission was to run “against the clock” not stop to do anything. When she stopped to assist another runner she revealed the highest level of servant leadership.

Similarly, she showed courage to step out of a traditional role. Here she was in the final steps of the 3200 meters event. Then she steps out of the lead position to take on someone else’s challenges? Yes! Interestingly enough, her momentary impulse to step aside from a role pursuing her own objective resulted in her becoming a de facto leader.

Finally, Vogel shares that her action to help another athlete was simply a “natural reaction to the circumstances.” But, how many people today would really take this natural step to help another? How many would have the courage to forget their pursuits and be of service to others?

As national coverage celebrates her victory for being a “good Samaritan”, then leaders can take note about how to selflessly serve others. Vogel’s action and the Olympics starting in the coming weeks will be a reminder that leadership really does start from within.
