GPS or Bust!

Recently I’ve noticed how much I rely on my global positioning system (GPS). It’s not that I don’t like to use maps or have a stack of Mapquest.com papers to fumble through. But, for me, it’s more convenient to use a more reliable system. I want something that will be correct almost 99 percent of the time. In that same way, I use a central positioning system to guide my decision-making every step of the way.

To some people, putting strategic plans in motion and reviewing goals is played out. But, I can never have too many plans set forth to keep me focused and on the right track. Taking the time to review the proposed action, next steps, and implementation keeps me focused. It just makes good sense. Can you imagine starting on a journey without any idea about which way to go? Will you embark on a hike without a sense of where the trail is expected to end?

I’m reminded of the opening chapters of my book, Leadership Building Blocks: An Insider’s Guide to Success. There I emphasize how leaders can only be successful with a solid vision, a plan. That goes hand in hand with what you already know: Fail to plan or plan to fail. The old adage holds true for leaders who want to have a significant impact.

Take the time today to activate your GPS system by entering your destination as “Action Plan.” That way you will be pointed directly toward success.
