Leadership Begins at Home

Too often, Father’s Day falls in the shadow of Mother’s Day? Well, this year it will not be forgotten. Well, at least not on this blog post! To all the dads out there, we have a lot to be thankful for from you. With your time and concern, you provide leadership and guidance from the very beginning in the home.

As a leader and author of Leadership Building Blocks: An Insider’s Guide to Success, I’d be remiss if I did not reflect about the leadership examples I learned during my formative years at home. In her book If You’ve Raised Kids, You Can Manage Anything: Leadership Begins at Home, author Ann Crittenden highlights some of the transferable skills that women bring to the workplace. These include multitasking, collaboration, and team-building. Every good leader brings a healthy dose likely learned from earlier experiences.

Bandaids for Leaders

Staying balanced just makes good sense. It is really important for leaders who must be available to assist hundreds and sometimes thousands of people at any given time. Ponder for a moment with me that self-care is like a BANDAID, those noted adhesive bandages. That’s right, a BANDAID.

Such a fascinating product, the BANDAID has been around for almost 90 years and was known in the 1970s by the fancy jingle “I am stuck on BANDAID, ‘cause BANDAID’s stuck on me.” No pun intended, but isn’t that jingle still stuck in your memory banks too? (more…)

Balance This!

Believe it or not, it’s not all about winning. Really! Most good leaders realize that somewhere along the way they have to find a way to activate the reset button and stay balanced.

A friend recently asked me “So, what is all this balance talk?” I reminded him that it’s what we already know and do without even thinking about it to stay focused. Every day we take steps to stay healthy, level-headed, and in tune with ourselves or others. It’s how we juggle our family, social, and professional lives. Periodically, we burn off steam taking pause from a regular routine or else we get stuck in a rut. Quite simply, we take time out. We stop.

Successful Leaders

Anyone can assume a leadership role. This happens through an appointment, election, or self-selection. Taking on the position does not mean that one is prepared or equipped to be an effective leader or successful. So, what does it take to be successful?

There are many ways leaders are deemed to be accomplished. Some are measured according to power, wealth, or fame achieved. On the contrary, leaders can be judged by outcomes and results. Regardless, leaders are assessed by how to they go from being ordinary Joe and Jane to transformational leaders.
